Brief
Historical Summary of Camp Reynolds |
The World War II Army camp, Camp
Reynolds, which was formerly
known as the
Shenango
Personnel Replacement Depot was
constructed in 1942 and was
closed in
1945. It was
located in Transfer, Pymatuning Township in Mercer
County Pa. between
the cities of Hermitage and
Greenville. |
|
The camp was operated by the ASF 3rd Service
Command. The purpose of the camp was to be a
personnel replacement depot for the
ETO (the
European Theater of Operations)
in World War II.
During its short existence over
one million men passed through
the camp. |
|
After its
closing the camp was dismantled and the barracks sold
to various colleges and local
individuals, some as
far away as Philadelphia and
Jamestown New York. Through the
efforts of local
Greenville businessmen the camp
was transformed into a
residential and commercial
development which utilized the
camp's infrastructure and many
of the buildings. This
development is called Reynolds,
named after Camp Reynolds which
was named after
PA Civil War hero General John
Reynolds who was killed the
first day of the battle of
Gettysburg. |
